What is a Kiwano? And How Do You Eat It?

Ever heard of the Kiwano? The Kiwano or “Horned Melon” is a an exotic fruit you’ll find grown in New Zealand. One of the world’s most intriguing fruits to look at, you can eat Kiwano as a simple fresh snack or an exotic dinner dish. Inside its golden skin is a vibrant green pulp, with a flavour best described as a refreshingly subtle mix of banana, lime and passionfruit. It’ll truly tantalise your tastebuds!

This tasty fruit also has benefits for your health. It’s a great source of magnesium and potassium, essential minerals, high in fibre and is low in natural sugars.

Kiwano is an incredibly versatile fruit. Make smoothies, juices, cocktails, dressings, salsas, sorbet, desserts, raita, fresh and vibrant salads. Squeeze the pulp over your favourite vanilla ice cream or yogurt, or drop a slice into your water  for a flavour boost. Add a dollop over freshly grilled fish or as a healthy taco topping.

KIWANO SALSA

What to do:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Season to taste and chill 20 minutes prior to serving.

What you'll need:

  • Four to six fresh tomatoes chopped

  • Pulp of one Enzed Exotics Kiwano

  • Juice of one lime

  • 1 clove of crushed garlic

  • 1 red chilli finely chopped

  • ½ finely chopped red onion

  • 1 stick of finely chopped celery

  • 1 large hand full of fresh cilantro chopped roughly

  • Season with salt and pepper to taste

EASY KIWANO ICE CREAM

What to do:

  1. Put into food processor and allow to thaw slightly. In the meantime mix together the pulp of one Enzed Exotics Kiwano and 2 tablespoons of agave nectar (or sweetener of your choice).

  2. Pulse the fruit in the processor and add the flesh/sweetener slowly.

  3. Process until smooth and creamy. Serve immediately.

What you'll need:

  • 2 large frozen bananas

  • 1 cup (or half) chopped fresh pineapple (also frozen)

  • Pulp of one Enzed Exotics Kiwano

  • 2 tablespoons of agave nectar

KIWANO CEVICHE

What to do:

  1. Cut the fish fillets into cubes and place in a bowl. Squeeze over the lime juice, cover and place in the fridge to marinate for 30mins. 

  2. Take the fish out of the fridge and pour off the excess lime juice. Cut the Kiwano in half and squeeze the pulp from both halves over the fish and lime. Add the fish sauce. Gently mix.

  3. Season to taste with the salt and enjoy! Also excellent served with a Kiwano Gin & Tonic.

What you'll need:

  • 1 Enzed Exotics Kiwano

  • Juice from 1 fresh lime

  • 200-250gm fresh white fish fillets

  • 1 Tbsp fish sauce

  • Sea salt
